Nintendo hears that, and has announced via Nintendo Direct, that during E3 week, Best Buy will have playable demos of as-yet released Wii U games in 100 stores across the US and Canada. Given that no one was likely expecting any new hardware from the firm, it's clear the gaming stalwart is looking for other ways to stir-up some interest. There's no mention of titles, so we're left to assume they'd be the games announced at the show. Either way, scratch out that week in June to make sure you find out first hand. A mod chip developer known as WiiKey is now claiming to have reverse engineered the Wii U's disk encryption, making it possible to play "backed up" copies of games via a USB drive. The group says its "WiikeU" optical drive emulator is region free and compatible with all Wii U console models. So far the hacking brood has yet to furnish any proof of its claims, but Nintendo is very much aware of the situation. <blockquote>Nintendo is aware that a hacking group claims to have compromised Wii U security; however, we have no reports of illegal Wii U games nor unauthorized applications playable on the system while in Wii U mode. Nintendo continuously monitors all threats to its products' security and will use technology and will take the necessary legal steps to prevent the facilitation of piracy. </blockquote>If in fact the WiiKeU is real, Nintendo could potentially counter the exploit with a system software update. Should such a turn of events take place, we could very well be looking at a return bout of console makers versus hackers. In response to Nintendo's statement on this matter, WiiKey posted a quote from the company on its website followed by four cryptic lines of code. By pointing the Wii U web browser at a local web server running a custom script, Chris Manning is able to read the Gamepad's input and map it to keyboard functions -- giving gamers with time and patience a complicated way to use the Wii U tablet as a simple PC gamepad. Manning told Kotaku that a future update will include touch-screen input, and he's also trying to crack Gamepad streaming, for PC gamers who can't quite wait for NVIDIA's Project Shield. The Wii U is still a long way from being properly hacked, of course, but we certainly won't shake a Wiimote at clever workarounds like this. If it works, it works.
