Here at Computex, ASUS is showing off its new 31.5-inch 4K monitor, which we just learned will cost $3,799. (Oh come now, don't get all sticker-shocked on us.) The photos below speak for themselves, really, but suffice to say, the combination of that 3,840 x 2,160, 140-ppi panel and that matte, anti-glare finish make for some stunning images. And because the bezels are so thin, photos more or less extend from one end of the screen, uninterrupted. Still think you'll have room to spare after taking into account this monitor's big footprint? ASUS is also prepping a 39-inch version with mostly the same specs (except for pixel density, obviously). We've got pictures of that guy too, though we still don't know how much it'll cost. Look for the 31.5-inch model to ship in June, with its big brother following sometime in Q3. And if a $3,800 monitor isn't in the cards, well, that's what hands-on galleries are for.</div></div>

Samsung plans to launch 65-, 55-inch 4K TVs in June

Now it's apparently ready to fulfill part of that promise, announcing in Korea that 65- and 55-inch models will launch next month. Of course our next question is how these smaller models will compare to the $39,999 MSRP 85S9 UHD TV in price. Hopefully they'll follow the path blazed by Sony, which recently introduced models at that size with pricing well below the $10,000 benchmark, although we expect Seiki's 50-incher will still hold the crown for value pricing. The press release mentions they will feature Samsung's upgradeable Smart TV platform and the "micro dimming ultimate" LED lighting of their larger cousin, but the odd "Timeless Gallery" frame / stand (pictured above on the 85-incher) was not listed.<br /> </div></div>

This grunt comes from a New York-sized population of 8.6 billion transistors -- 1.5 billion more than in NVIDIA's Titan -- which can handle pretty much any current game at 4K resolution and max detail settings, including <em>Tomb Raider</em> (with flowing locks enabled) and <em>Crysis 3. </em>Both these games happen to be bundled with card, along with <em>Bioshock Infinite</em> and five other big titles.</div><div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;"> Note, however, that you'll need a pricey CPU to be certain of getting the frame rates shown in the slide deck, which are based on an Intel Core i7-3960X. The two also support AirPlay streaming alongside more commonplace DLNA media sharing and offer remote control mobile apps. Home theater futureproofers mostly have to decide on audio channels and network support before they buy: the $800 AVR 2700 produces 7.1-channel surround and sticks to Ethernet alone for networking, while the $996 AVR 3700 introduces 7.2-channel audio and WiFi. Few of us will use either receiver to its full potential right now, but well-heeled 4K TV owners (or just the well-prepared) can pick one up today.</div></div>

The 50-inch Ultra HD set is officially shipping to the US later in April, and it will still carry that regular $1,500 price tag when sales expand from TigerDirect (which claims to have stock today) to include Amazon and QVC, among others. We'd remain cautious about leaping in when Seiki is trying to skip a year or three of the usual commoditization process, but those who insist on their 4K bragging rights won't have long to wait before they can start boasting.</div></div>

The brand is new to the US market and as such unfamiliar to most, but with a $1,300 listing on TigerDirect it's been lighting up AV enthusiast and deal-hunting forums alike. We haven't yet had a chance to see this display, but hope to take a look shortly. In the meantime, there are plenty of reasons not to be an early adopter -- the infamous eye charts suggest 4K's impact at this size may be reduced, it's an unknown company with unknown standards for quality and service, a new HDMI standard may be incoming and there's no content until the $699 FMP-X1 player arrives this summer -- but with a sub-$2K pricetag some would say you can't afford <em>not</em> to have an Ultra HD set in your possession. Those same people would also suggest inviting us over to watch the game (sports, console, but most likely a super high-res PC title if you can manage) on it, and indicate we are willing to bring refreshments.</div></div>

Long GOP is a high-efficiency codec designed to meet the requirements of the professional market, while XAVC-S is aimed squarely at consumers with its MP4 wrapping. Of course, both codecs should play nice with Sony's series of CineAlta cameras (the PMW-F5 is pictured above), which is set to reach over 2,000 units shipped by the end of the month. Sony's not the only one making XAVC-compatible devices however; over 60 manufacturers have applied for XAVC licenses while 31 others have pledged to support it in their products. Seeing as 4K hardware is finally dipping into affordability, we can't fault Sony for getting the ball rolling, at least from the creation side of things.<br /> </div></div>

Phantom Flex4K camera unveiled, blasts through 1000 4K frames per second

Starting at $110k, it builds on its Phantom Flex predecessor with up to 1,000 fps in 5 second bursts at 4k, 2,000 fps in 2k and 3,000 fps at 720p resolution -- speeds that'll net you almost three minutes of 4k video when played back at 24 fps. The full 16:9 Super 35 sensor-equipped model can be had with PL, PV Canon EOS or Nikon F/G mounts and will capture RAW or compressed footage in an "industry-standard," but as yet unspecified format. The Flex4K will also be available with a Phantom Cinemag IV, which will hold up to 2TB of data, or nearly 2 hours of RAW 4k footage at normal recording speeds. Other features include a Bluetooth transmitter and handheld Phantom RCU for remote operation, 12+ stops of dynamic range, HD-SDI video output and a camera control interface and form factor that hews to industry norms, according to Vision Research. The company showcased a pair of 4K OLED prototypes at NAB 2013, outing a 4,096 x 2,160 30-inch model as well as a 3,840 x 2160 56-inch display. Both panels boast of wide viewing angles and low color shift, promising accurate signal reproduction for industry professionals working with 4K content. No word yet on pricing, but professionals can look forward to upgrading sometime in next year. Sony also announced a refresh for its existing line of professional OLED displays. Sony announces $699 FMP-X1 4K media player and distribution service

Plans for both were first revealed at CES, however the official press release (included after the break) provides the full details, that it will be $699 and arrive preloaded with 10 4K films and shorts when it ships this summer. Starting in the fall, the video service will launch, with "fee-based" access to Sony's library of movies. Sony also revealed that it has started adding to the 4K movie collections for the buyers of its $25k 84-inch Ultra HDTV, delivering <em>Lawrence of Arabia</em>. Those buyers will be able to swap their current player for the FMP-X1 when the 4K distribution network launches in the fall. The "mastered in 4K" (but delivered in 1080p) Blu-ray discs are still part of the plan as well, and buyers of the new TVs can expect <em>Spiderman</em>, <em>Ghostbusters</em> and <em>Angels & Demons</em> as pack-ins.</div></div>

Sony announces pricing for 55- and 65-inch 4K TVs, shipping April 21st

You're certainly not alone, but if you're willing to compromise on a few viewable inches, you could very well save yourself quite a bit of cash. At Sony's NAB press conference today here in Las Vegas, the company finally shared pricing for its smaller 4K models, the Bravia XBR-55X900A and the XBR-65X900A, which ring in at 55 and 65 inches, respectively. That first flavor will retail for a mere $5,000, with its larger sibling due in stores for just a grand more. As we learned at CES, both models offer Triluminous displays with X-Reality PRO and Motionflow XR960 technology, WiFi and NFC one-touch screen mirroring, not to mention native support for displaying 3,840 x 2,160 pixels images. The more budget-friendly duo will hit stores on April 21st -- they'll also be available to order online in just two weeks' time.<br /> </div></div>

Toshiba showcases 2013 AV range and updated Cloud TV platform (eyes-on)

We revisited a few products we had flings with at CES, were introduced to some new panels, and taken through the ins-and-outs of the company's fresh Cloud TV interface. Was there anything to get excited about? Head past the break for the full tour.</div><h3 dir="ltr" id="title0" style="text-align: left;"> 2013 LED HDTV lineup</h3><div class="image-container" dir="ltr" style="text-align: center;"> <img alt="DNP Toshiba showcases 2013 AV range and updated Cloud TV platform eyeson" data-src-height="412" data-src-width="620" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/03/ledlead.jpg" /></div><div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;"> Not everyone wants or needs monolithic displays and internet services, which is where Toshiba's 1 and 2 series come into play. As you would imagine, the 1 series is the most basic of the range, with full HD (1,920 x 1,080) panels ranging from 19 to 40 inches. There are a few configuration options which chop and change features, such as D1, which denotes a built-in DVD player, and L1, which signifies USB support and picture / music / video capabilities. Moving up to the 39- and 50-inch 2 series grants you MHL support, but no other bells and whistles. Prices for these entry level sets start at below £200 ($300) for the 1 series, which are available now, and go up to £600 ($900) for the biggest 2 series TV. There's no word on when the 2 series will hit stores, but they're expected "shortly."</div><div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;"> Toshiba's common 2013 design features and Cloud TV functionality (more on that later) starts with the L4 and W4 series, spreading up through the 6, 7 and UHDTV 9 series displays. Surprisingly, the 32-inch W4 is only 720p-ready, but has on-board WiFi, WiDi and USB storage program recording. However, the L4 series steps back up to 1080p, and will be available in three sizes up to 50 inches. We didn't see any of the 6 series at CES, which'll come in 32- and 40-inch options with all of the aforementioned features and "super slim design." Also boasting a skinny profile are the 40-, 50- and 58-inch 7 series HDTVs, with active-shutter 3D and 2D-to-3D conversion joining the spec list for these models. All of Cloud TV-equipped flatscreens will go on sale in May starting at £330 ($500) for the W4 and up to £1200 ($1815) for the 58-inch 7 series.</div><div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;"> A quick note on the shared aesthetics of the 4 series and above. Their rounded edges and slim bezels are intended for the "modern" living space, but what we liked most were the bases, which are clearly intended to be as discreet as possible. The bezels aren't <i>that</i> slim, but probably won't put you off picking up any of the TVs if the features take your fancy. They are either all black, or a mixture of black and silver plastic, and don't look or feel particularly "premium." Previously, the TV interface (e.g. programming guide) was separated from Cloud TV services, but in this iteration, everything's married into one user experience and accessed via a common button on the remote. The home screen pulls up a picture-in-picture of what's currently playing, an all-important weather widget, and recommended content based on the viewing habits of up to seven unique profiles (it's age appropriate, too). Social media addicts will appreciate the live twitter feed also on the home screen. It shows updates relevant to the top programs being discussed, and a deeper menu allows you to switch to one of those shows, or perform custom hashtag searching. Toshiba plans to integrate chatter from other social networks like Facebook in the future.</div><div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;"> Cloud TV also has a media player for accessing music, pictures and video stored on connected USB devices or your home network. A metasearch feature known as MediaGuide will also tap into that data, as well as what's currently on normal TV and what can be found on VOD and streaming services. Speaking of streaming, various apps will come as standard, including Netflix, iPlayer, YouTube and Blinkbox. Deezer and Skype will also be available at launch, with an app store coming later, which'll hopefully be filled with more software developed under the Smart TV Alliance standard. If there isn't an app for that, there's always the on-board browser with HTML5 and Flash support. We say sneak because they're all pretty small, and if you're looking for something to marry with one of Toshiba's new sets, they conform to the whole curved-edge common design. All models will of course play Blu-Rays, as well as provide access to several online services, such as Netflix, iPlayer, YouTube and Picasa. Depending on how much you want to spend, you can also add WiFi and Miracast connectivity out of the box, as well as 3D support. The basic model (BDX2400KB) is expected to retail at £79 ($120), the second-tier unit (BDX2400KB) at £89 ($135) and the best of the bunch (BDX5400KB) at £99 ($150). We also saw another TV condiment in the form of the SBK1 Soundbar intended for panels from 39 to 42 inches. It's got a built-in sub, touts Toshiba's 3D sound technology (which promises uniform quality regardless of your position), and will be out in April for £129 ($195).</div><div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><h3 dir="ltr" id="title3" style="text-align: left;"> 9-series UHDTVs</h3><div class="image-container" dir="ltr" style="text-align: center;"> <img alt="DNP Toshiba showcases 2013 AV range and updated Cloud TV platform eyeson" data-src-height="412" data-src-width="620" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/03/9serieslead.jpg" /></div><div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;"> Toshiba's 9-series 4K LED TVs (3,840 x 2,160) were obviously the stars of the show, and in addition to the 84-inch beast we've seen before, we also got a glimpse of the 58- and 65-inch models. Debuting with the 9 series is the new CEVO 4K chip, which attempts to upscale content to make the best use of the resolution. There has to be extra data available to it, however -- from Blu-Ray discs, for example -- so the chip can perform its wizardry and check for loss of quality and artifacts before deciding to push the enhanced image through the pixels. Upscaling is supported from any HDMI input, with one port accepting native Ultra HD. CEVO 4K also promises to make colors richer and add "texture" for greater image depth. We were taken in by the glamor, as we always are with 4K displays despite the lack of content to make one a viable purchase. We aren't any closer to a strict release date or price range, though. They're expected to drop sometime in the summer for "competitive" prices, which almost certainly means "ridiculously expensive" to some people, or "are you kidding me?" to the other 99 percent. </div></div>

The 84-inch PixelSense-esque table is designed to be used by up to 32 fingers at once, letting groups paw around interactive exhibits on a large scale. This one, in particular, comes with a 3,840 x 2,160 UHD display, infrared-based multitouch and a steel stand that lets you mount it at a wide variety of angles. Japan plans to broadcast 2014 World Cup in 4K

Japan's Ministry of <span>Internal Affairs and Communications</span> expects to broadcast the 2014 World Cup next July in 4K, using free capacity on its communications satellites rather than the usual delivery methods -- the bandwidth required is reportedly too much for conventional sources. The 4K airing is still coming two years earlier than originally planned, however, and should eventually spread to broadcast satellites and terrestrial networks. The fortunate ones who can tune in to the ultra-sharp <em>futebol</em> will need an exorbitantly-priced 4K TV set to watch, but it's safe to presume that they'll have some of the best viewing parties around.</div></div></div>
