Think twice. The company has just unveiled the 8900M series, an adaptation of its Graphics Core Next architecture for desktop replacement-class gaming laptops. To call it a big jump would be an understatement: compared to the 8800M, the flagship 8970M chip doubles the stream processors to 1,280, hikes the clock speed from 725MHz to 850MHz and bumps the memory speed slightly to 1.2GHz. The net effect is about 12 to 54 percent faster game performance than NVIDIA's current mobile speed champion, the GTX 680M, and up to four times the general computing prowess in OpenCL. The 8970M is more than up to the task of powering up to 4K in one screen, and it can handle up to six screens if there are enough ports.</div><div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">We'll see how long AMD's performance reign lasts, although we won't have to wait to try the 8970M -- MSI is launching the GPU inside the new GX70 laptop you see above. We got a brief, hands-off tease of the 17.3-inch GX60 successor at the 8900M's unveiling, and it's clear the graphics are the centerpiece. We saw it driving <em>Crysis</em><em> 3</em> very smoothly on one external display while powering 2D on two other screens, albeit through a bulky set of Mini DisplayPort, HDMI and VGA cables. Otherwise, the GX70 is superficially similar to its ancestor with that chunky profile, an unnamed Richland-based AMD A10 processor, Killer networking and a SteelSeries keyboard. This grunt comes from a New York-sized population of 8.6 billion transistors -- 1.5 billion more than in NVIDIA's Titan -- which can handle pretty much any current game at 4K resolution and max detail settings, including <em>Tomb Raider</em> (with flowing locks enabled) and <em>Crysis 3. </em>Both these games happen to be bundled with card, along with <em>Bioshock Infinite</em> and five other big titles.</div><div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;"> Note, however, that you'll need a pricey CPU to be certain of getting the frame rates shown in the slide deck, which are based on an Intel Core i7-3960X. Minds blown, AMD took responsibility for the part it played in the mess, admitting the demo was running on its Radeon HD 7990 graphics card. It's the first time the company's confirmed the existence of the long-fabled card, and went as far as calling the case-busting monster "the world's fastest." All we know is the card combines two of the HD 7970's Tahiti GPUs -- AMD's not sharing the full specs -- but the eagle-eyed folks at <i>AnandTech</i> have plucked a few extra details from the limited pictures available. They note the open-air cooling, which would require a drafty case but mean the fans should run fairly quiet, and that power consumption is likely to be no more than 375 watts. Such claims can't be waved around without being tested, and indeed <em>The Tech Report</em>, <em>HotHardware</em>, <em>Bit.tech </em>and other sites have just returned their verdicts. Read on for our review roundup.</div><div class="image-container" dir="ltr" style="text-align: center;"> <img alt="AMD Radeon HD 7790 review roundup what to expect from a $149 gaming card" data-src-height="346" data-src-width="619" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/03/amd7790-details.jpg" /></div><div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;"> Let's start with the upsides: pretty much all the sites listed here found that the Radeon HD 7790 met their expectations, providing a sensible compromise between the cheaper 7770 and the more expensive 7850 and generally staying toe-to-toe with NVIDIA's similarly priced GTX 650 Ti. <em>The Tech Report</em> found that the card coped admirably with Lara Croft's hair at 1080p with High details settings, far outpacing the 7770 with an average frame rate of 54 fps and also more consistent smoothness. Titles like <em>Skyrim</em>, <em>Battlefield 3</em> and<em> The Witcher 2</em> were hiccup-free at around 40 fps. <em>HotHardware</em> reported that the 7790-based cards it tested were "very quiet" and ran cool compared to other options -- in fact, it ran even cooler under load than the 7770.</div><div class="more-info" dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;"> And now the bad news: some games and resolutions are simply beyond the capacity of graphics cards at this price point. According to <em>Bit.tech</em>, <em>Crysis 3</em> runs at just 21fps at 1080p with Very High detail settings, and the only consolation is that a 1GB GTX 650 Ti can't play the game either. Don't expect to go beyond 1080p either: <em>HotHardware</em> found that <em>Hitman: Absolution</em> and <em>Sleeping Dogs</em> both fell far below 30fps at 1,920 x 1,200, for example. As it turns out, though, we're looking at something more subtle and just <em>slightly</em> more affordable: the new Radeon HD 7790. It slots into a cosy niche between the 7770 and the 7850, targeting gamers who want a good helping of 28nm silicon and potential for CrossFire expansion but who don't want to stretch beyond $149. Efficiency tweaks allow the 7790 to offer almost 50 percent more processing power than the 7770 while only demanding a smidgen of extra wattage (85 W instead of 80 W), which bodes well for cooling and decibels. Relative to the 7850, which can now be had for under $200, you'd be getting a card with half the power consumption, half the memory (1GB GDDR5), half the memory bandwidth (128-bit) and around 30 percent less processing power.</div><div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;"> Compare it to the closest rival from NVIDIA, the GTX 650 Ti, which currently fetches upwards of $140, and AMD claims the Radeon HD 7790 offers an average 20 percent advantage in frame rates at 1080p -- enough that you shouldn't need to worry about games like <em>Tomb Raider</em> or <em>Hitman: Absolution</em> at that resolution. The Cintiq 22HD and 24HD dominate at the professional high-end, but, as you get smaller and cheaper, more options come into play -- whether they're non-display tablets like the Intuos5 or complete PCs like Microsoft's Surface Pro (software issues aside). However, if you're looking for full-fledged Cintiq qualities in a smaller package, then this morning's announcement of the $1,000 Cintiq 13HD probably caught your interest. No, it's not the rumored standalone tablet, but our first impression is that it's a lightweight and handy option for serious work. The new pen-sensitive (not touch sensitive) 1920 x 1080 display makes things look small onscreen, but the pen has Wacom's usual accuracy so we didn't struggle to hit controls. Also, if you have a nice big primary display, you might want to continue using that for controls and just use the 13-incher for drawing. The physical controls on the right should be instantly familiar. They require some serious bezel, but the pen-sensitive area is still much larger than the Intuos5, which outwardly has the same dimensions. A proprietary cable containing HDMI video, power and USB data juts out of the side and it could potentially be a hindrance -- although we're going to leave that question open until Billy Steele gets some review time. We've got to ask, though: where's some high bandwidth 60GHz wireless connectivity when you really need it? The stand is simple but sturdy and light. Three lift-out flaps provide 20, 30 and 50 degree angles to work at, with 50 degrees being primarily for useful for displaying work rather than creating it. The stylus brings a new feel, but it'll work with other current Cintiqs as well as with Intuos tablets back to the Intuos4. Rather than coming with some kind of travel holder to connect it to the tablet, the "Pro Pen" comes in its own travel box with a selection nibs and color-coding rings. Altogether, the Cintiq 13HD is a tidy package and we're keen to get more time with it. In the meantime, check out the gallery and video above to learn more. </div></div>
