Whatever the storage level, players are getting the same 14-inch 1,600 x 900 display, quad-core 2.2GHz Core i7 processor, 8GB of RAM and GeForce GTX 765M graphics. Showing of his writing skills at Computex on an experimental 7-inch tablet, he used a simple (ie. non-digitizer) stylus to write at several different thicknesses, utilizing a flat surface at the other end of the pen to erase any mistakes -- there's sensitivity to the millimeter, apparently. NVIDIA reckons this will improve battery life while using the stylus and offers a high detection rate (thanks to the software-based processes) for slick, curved lines. The primary hardware necessary? No less than NVIDIA's new Tegra 4 chip, of course, and DirectTouch. Hands-on with NVIDIA Shield: NVIDIA's project turned product

That's a full $100 more than the PlayStation Vita -- arguably the most competent competition for Shield's hardcore skewing demographic -- and even a smidgen over the cost of various full-on game consoles. Despite the high barrier to entry, NVIDIA tells us Shield will follow the same annualized model that its mobile phone counterparts do: a new internal upgrade each year to keep up with the times. And we already know what that future looks like. Given all that baggage, we can't help but approach our last hands-on before launch with an eye toward whether or not this is a worthy purchase. Is NVIDIA's Shield worth getting in on early? </div><div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="post-gallery" dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;"><h3 class="title">NVIDIA Shield (Hands-on final)</h3><br /> <img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/05/dsc06936_95x95.jpg" /> <img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/05/dsc06938_95x95.jpg" /> <img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/05/dsc06939_95x95.jpg" /> <img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/05/dsc06943_95x95.jpg" /> <img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/05/dsc06944_95x95.jpg" /> <img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/05/dsc06946_95x95.jpg" /> <br /> </div><div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">We're inclined to say yes, solely based on the Shield's curiosity factor, but less so when it comes down to actual use (more on that in a minute). Shield remains a bizarre, left field entry from a company known for making PC internals; heck, Shield is a bizarre, left field entry from virtually anyone (aside from Razer, perhaps). It's a "premium" product, which is marketing speak for "expensive," and the Shield <em>feels</em> expensive. There's a delectable heft and solidity to Shield, and its triggers, dual analog thumbsticks, and gorgeous 5-inch screen all serve to highlight its cohesion. Though the clamshell design is a bit clumsy, the Shield is a rather pretty device -- especially while open -- adding all the more to its allure.</div><div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">However, it's easy to enjoy the fleeting moments of early love with Shield. Then you start thinking about its limitations. It's an Android device, and even with Tegra 4 it's unlikely we'll see Vita-quality games. Ah, but it has PC streaming! Should your computer run GeForce Experience software and a GTX 650 GPU or better, that is.</div><div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">NVIDIA doesn't seem to mind that Shield isn't for everyone -- the company's targeting the folks who already own its GPUs -- but we want to love it as much as those folks. Its promise is certainly a thrilling one; beyond just Android games, the fact that Shield can stream a huge library of Steam games is incredibly enticing. That promise, however, wears thin when you begin factoring in not just the added cost of a PC (should you not own one), but one potentially problematic control issue. Due to the Shield's clamshell design, its two analog sticks are depressed deep into the handheld's cavity. Resultantly, the left thumstick always feels just out of reach, while the right one is far enough away that it's easy to rub your thumb against the controller's X and A face buttons. We'll have to see how this stands up to longer term use in our review, but for now it's a worrisome issue at very least.</div><div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">So, should you buy one in June? The answer to that likely depends more on your expendable income and whether you own a PC with a powerful enough NVIDIA GPU to stream games than anything else. Let's be honest: the Shield is a niche, boutique device that, while enticing to many, probably won't fit into your life without some meaty prerequisites. For you diehard PC folks, however, this is your gaming handheld. For the rest of us ... well, doesn't it look neat?</div></div>

The specs haven't changed -- it's still rockin' a Tegra 4 processor with 2GB of RAM, a 5-inch "retinal" IPS display (1280x720), and 16GB of storage (expandable to 64GB via microSD). The concept remains nigh identical with what NVIDIA head Jen-Hsun Huang introduced back at CES: a console-quality controller with an HD screen mounted to it for on-the-go and streaming PC gaming.<br /> Beyond the price point and release window, the Shield is also getting a few new game announcements in Double Fine's <em>Broken Age</em> and <em>Costume Quest</em>, not to mention a new iteration of <em>Chip's Challenge</em> named "Chuck's Challenge." The AR.Drone folks are also adding in support for the Shield, enabling controller-based inputs over the motion-based usual. NVIDIA's also promising monthly OTA updates for the system, including the latest version of Android (the system ships with Jelly Bean 4.2.1). The company also warns that not all Android apps will work out of the box -- specifically, any that don't support landscape mode (the Netflix login screen, for example, has an issue here). Kinks aside, should you wish to be the very first to get a Shield, it's available for pre-order starting right now on NVIDIA's website (if you're on the mailing list, that is), or on May 20th everywhere else. Fresh contributions from Avionic Design's Thierry Reding have brought that extra dimension back, albeit in limited form. His early patches for the Linux kernel enable support for 3D when using the Tegra Direct Rendering Manager driver. There's also a matching Gallium3D driver for us regular users, although it's still young: it can run reference 3D code as of a recent check, but can't produce visible imagery. While it may take some months before everything falls into place, the officially-backed work should make the (slightly aging) chip that much more useful beyond the realms of Android and Windows RT.<br /> </div></div>

That's <em>five</em> new GPUs in total, with the GeForce GT 720M and 735M making up the "mainstream" segment, while the GT 740M, 745M, and 750M make up the "performance" portion of the lineup. All five cards include NVIDIA's "GPU Boost 2.0" tech, which allows the GPU to alter its clock speed on-the-fly for the sake of efficiency -- although this is mainly a software-level upgrade over the first iteration of Boost, and it's still the same familiar Kepler architecture under the hood. It won't be too long before we start seeing the newest NVIDIA mobile GPUs in notebooks at retail, as the PR says they'll be in notebooks from "every leading manufacturer" in the coming months.</div></div>

While it looks like a single-DIN car stereo laid bare, the configurable kit incorporates a Tegra processor (for usual infotainment functions), multiple car-friendly interfaces and a Kepler-based graphics chipset that can power car detection, lane departure and other computer vision systems by using CUDA or OpenCV code. The net effect should be a much simpler development process: automakers can consolidate some of their test hardware in one Jetson unit that they can upgrade or swap out if newer technology comes along. NVIDIA isn't naming the handful of designers and suppliers that are already building car electronics using Jetson, although history offers a few possible candidates.<br /> </div></div>

NVIDIA reveals Volta next-gen GPU platform

Called Volta, it's scheduled to arrive after Maxwell, and will advance GPU technology with a ridiculous amount of memory bandwidth. Volta GPUs will have access to up to 1TB per second of bandwidth by stacking the DRAM on top of the GPU itself, with a silica substrate between them. Then, by cutting a hole through the silicon and connecting each layer it's possible to move, according to Huang "all of the data from a full Blu-Ray disc through the chip in 1/50th of a second." Karrels will be showing off the new digits at the GPU technology conference in San Jose, demonstrating the CUDA-voodoo necessary to harness all of that Kepler-based computing power.</a></div></div>

NVIDIA opted out of PlayStation 4, cites Sony not offering enough money

But there was AMD, picking up the empty spot left by NVIDIA, powering the PS4 with its 8-core "Jaguar" CPU and Radeon GPU. So, what happened? While we don't know the specifics of how AMD won the contract, NVIDIA's senior VP of content and tech Tony Tamasi tells <em>GameSpot</em> that his company, "Didn't want to do the business at the price those guys [Sony] were willing to pay."</div><div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;"> In so many words, Tamasi says NVIDIA weighed its options against other potential products the company would be working on -- rather than producing discreet tech for a single console manufacturer, thus being unable to use said tech elsewhere -- and decided against it. "We had to look at console business as an opportunity cost. If we say, did a console, what other piece of our business would we put on hold to chase after that?" he tells the game site.</div><div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;"> NVIDIA is indeed working on a variety of new products, including an Android-powered Tegra 4 gaming handheld called Project Shield. That's in addition to its bread-and-butter business of PC GPU development -- the company recently unveiled its Titan GPU, a $1,000 card with enough power to keep your gaming graphics needs met for years to come (or at least we sure hope so at that price).</div></div>

The 8mm-thick handset, which will find a home in the labs of manufacturers and carriers (as well as the desks of many third-party devs), sports a 5-inch 1080p display, 13MP rear-facing camera, PRISM 2, Chimera, DirectTouch and LTE (we're told that most major bands are included for testing purposes). As it's not geared for general consumer use, so it's not the thinnest, sleekest or best-looking device, and the back doesn't even seem to snap completely shut. Units are being sampled as we speak, and we should expect to see devices hit the market in nine to twelve months. Since it's still pretty early in the process, we weren't able to turn on the phone or benchmark the chipset; the only exception to this rule, as you'll see in the video, was when a rep showed a gaming demo on his particular unit.</div><div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">While the 4i is the smaller brother of the Tegra 4 family, it's still expected to be quite powerful. The chip, which is designed specifically for smartphones (tablets will take advantage of Tegra 4 instead), features four 28nm Cortex-A9 r4 (beefed-up from the standard A9) cores that can be clocked up to 2.3GHz, 60 GPU cores (compared to 72 on the T4) and an integrated i500 LTE baseband modem. For additional comparison, NVIDIA showed us the two sibling boards side-by-side. And though our initial performance impressions were positive -- it runs 1080p video and games smoothly -- there was only so much we could say to illustrate how fast the performance is. After all, Tegra 3 already does a fine job handling games and full HD movies. What we <em>really</em> needed were benchmarks, some quantitative data to help show the difference between Tegra 4 devices and whatever's currently on the market. Fortunately for all of you, we just got our chance: here at Mobile World Congress, the company has reference tablets set up expressly for the purpose of running tests. So, we did just that... over and over and over until we had a long list of scores. Ideally, we would have had some of our older Tegra 3 review units with us here in Spain -- you know, the Sony Xperia Tablet S, the ASUS Transformer Pad Infinity, maybe even the Acer Iconia A700. Basically, other 10-inch Android tablets with quad-core processors. Unfortunately, we didn't have them on hand, so we couldn't re-run the benchmarks on those devices with the latest software installed. That would have made for the best comparison, and we plan to do just that when we eventually start reviewing some Tegra 4 products.</div><div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;"> Still. C'mon. Just <em>look</em> at those benchmark scores. Even if we were to repeat all of our benchmark tests on those older tablets, we're pretty sure a software upgrade would not be enough to help these older tablets match Tegra 4, or even come close. Quadrant scores in the 16,000s? CF-Bench results in the 40,000 range? All unheard of.</div><blockquote class="quote right" dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;"> Just <em>look</em> at those benchmark scores.</blockquote><div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;"> Particularly stunning was that SunSpider result, which should give you a strong idea of what you can expect in terms of web browsing performance. In short, the tablet chewed through all that code in just 499ms (keep in mind that lower numbers are better in this particular test). To give you some perspective, the iPad 4 scores an average of 865ms in the test. So if you enjoy the web browsing experience on your iPad, you're going to be pretty pleased what NVIDIA has to offer here. Put differently, when we ran SunSpider on a laptop, the desktop version of Chrome achieved a score of 188.8ms -- we're used to seeing a much bigger gap between desktop and mobile browsers.</div><div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;"> In addition to letting us benchmark our hearts out, NVIDIA showed us a demo of that same reference tablet hooked up to the same sort of power meter OEMs use to measure power consumption. As you can see in the video below, we've got a 1080p video running, with the power rating hovering around 950 milliwatts, compared to 1.2 watts on some other 1080p devices. The result, says Matt Wuebbling, director of Tegra product marketing, is an extra two hours of battery life compared to the competition. Of course, we can't take his word for it -- we'll just have to wait until we get our first Tegra 4 phone in to review. If nothing else, though, that clip below gives you another chance to see how Tegra 4 handles full HD movies. Take 'er away, and stay tuned for some proper reviews -- hopefully in the not-too-distant future.</div><div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;"> <strong>Update</strong>: We decided to remove Tegra 4's GLBench score (57 fps) from the comparison table because the older tablets listed there were benchmarked using a different version of that test. Suffice to say, though, NVIDIA says a score of 57 fps in that benchmark is typical for a Tegra 4 device.</div></div>

NVIDIA unveils the GTX Titan, an enormous graphics card that costs $1,000 (eyes-on)

With 2,688 CUDA cores, 6GB of GDDR5 RAM, and 7.1 billion transistors packed into the 10.5-inch frame, Titan's capable of pushing 4,500 Gigaflops of raw power -- NVIDIA's pitching Titan as the means to "power the world's first gaming supercomputers." The company even showed off the Titan in its mightiest form, bootstrapped to two others running together (three-way SLI), which powers graphics showcase <em>Crysis 3</em> running at its highest settings: a whopping 5760x1080 resolution across three monitors. Of course, a setup like that would cost you <em>quite</em> a pretty penny; just one GTX Titan costs $1,000, not to mention <em>three</em> (nor all the other hardware required to support it).</div><div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;"> Should you prefer your gaming PCs to not be of the neon-lit, triple GPU, above-$10,000 variety, NVIDIA was also showing off the Titan in a Falcon Northwest boutique PC. The company's working with a variety of boutique PC makers to incorporate the Titan (see: Maingear), making NVIDIA's top of the line a teensy bit more accessible to your average joe.</div><div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;"> GTX Titan is the new top of the line for NVIDIA, effectively pushing aside the GTX 690 and setting a new benchmark for performance. Of course, with a $1,000 price tag and freedom -- nay, <em>encouragement</em> -- to tweak its nitty gritty settings, the Titan isn't really meant for your average anyone. The PC game-playing early adopters, however? Here's your next GPU. Hopefully you've got a big, empty space in your rig, as you'll need it.
