After initiating plans for a new structure next to the existing Googleplex and then abandoning them last year, it's opting for a new facility designed by Seattle firm NBBJ (which also created offices for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation) in another area of the city. Planned to open as soon as 2015 -- potentially ahead of Apple's halo-shaped new digs -- it's called Bay View and consists of nine buildings connected by bridges over 42 acres.</div><div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;"> According to Google it's designed for many workers to operate just on natural light, and avail themselves of the many cafes and green roofs. Quoted in the article is civil engineer David Radcliffe, who claims that employees will never be more than a two and a half minute walk away from each other, which, along with the bent floorplan of each building, is intended to create opportunities for innovation through "casual collisions". The FTC went so far as to level charges against the company for allegedly not doing enough to secure software. That saga may be winding to a close now that HTC's American division has agreed to settle the whole affair. The smartphone designer has to do more than just deliver patches, which it already has -- it's now required to run a "comprehensive" security program to weed out flaws in advance, and it will be the subject of outside assessments every other year for the next 20 years. As tough as those conditions may seem, they're easier than dealing with fines or stiffer penalties. They'll hopefully prevent repeats of any privacy scares as well, even if the real-world risk has been slight.<br /> </div></div>

Frankly, we're not sure manufacturers did either. But the old assumption that tiny = <i>tinny</i> is starting to seem a bit unfair. Last year, Dutch chip-maker NXP released a new type of mobile audio component -- the TFA9887 -- that allowed a mobile device to monitor its speaker system in real-time in order to max out volume without risking damage to the driver. Although NXP is way too modest to confirm it, we happen to know that this chip made its way into a number of HTC devices, including the new One, One X+ and 8X, where it's been described as "feedback" speaker technology.</div><div style="text-align: left;">The extra voltage delivered to speakers by this generation of component hasn't been especially wild -- just a couple of volts above the industry norm of around 3V. But what you're about to hear after the break is the next-gen TFA9890, which is expected to appear in devices around the middle of this year, and which racks things all the way up to 9.5V. This promises to be a much more audible leap relative to traditional no-feedback speaker systems, and you should be able to spot the difference for yourself after the break.</div></div><div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">In the video, a regular Nexus 7 tablet has been modded so that it can switch between its stock 3V audio system and the new 9.5V system from NXP. The speaker and all other variables remain the same. When the mod is activated, things get seriously, noticeably louder -- to the tune of between 3 and 6 dB by the crude reckoning of our microphone. Because the feedback system replaces the safety margins that a manufacturer must normally build into a device. A Nexus 7 or or any other phone or tablet could have its speaker grill blocked by a cover, or have a sine wave played through it (as we've actually done many times), or have sounds played at its over-sensitive resonant frequency. All these events could cause damage unless the speaker's power is conservatively capped or software filters are applied (or both). By switching to a feedback system, which can adjust on the fly to blockages, temperature increases and shifts in the resonant frequency, no safety margin is required and the speaker can be pushed a lot harder.</div><div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">We think Apple uses similar (but not NXP-made) tech in its recent devices and has reached at least 7V, while the HTC One uses <i>dual</i> feedback controlled speakers. The use of this type of circuitry is becoming an industry trend to meet demand for better movie watching, sat nav instructions, speakerphone modes and everything else speaker-related.
